In all the world of sport, even the best of the best still need coaching. And in other areas of life,
such as business, personal relationships, and career skills, the most successful people have always
realized that expert coaching can make the difference between mere competence and mastery.
Strange, how we commonly accept the value of coaching in these areas of life,
yet many of us have yet to acknowledge the importance of coaching in our fitness endeavors.
Of course, personal trainers are not traditionally thought of as coaches, but in reality,
they are exactly that. Like coaches, personal trainers are dedicated to helping their charges
realize their potential. Great personal trainers not only educate, but also motivate and inspire their clients.
And like great coaches, the best personal trainers know that the study of movement can convey useful
lessons of life from increased confidence and self esteem to improved discipline and focus.
We're not saying that everyone needs the services of a personal trainer all the time.
We are saying that if you think you're too knowledgeable or advanced to benefit from seeing a personal trainer,
you're dead wrong! Following are just a few situations where the services of a competent trainer can make your
trip up the mountain path (as the old Zen masters liked to put it!) a little easier and a lot faster.
Beginners: This, of course, is the most obvious category of client for personal trainers.
As a beginner to the fitness field, you have two choices either to "wing it" by reading books and magazines,
talking to the local "gym rat," and/or watching late night info mercials, OR you can hire a personal trainer
and develop good training and nutritional habits right from the start. It sure beats trying to erase long standing
bad habits and re learn everything you thought you already knew! As a beginner, consider hiring a trainer
for 8 to 16 weeks long enough to learn the various fitness principles, equipment technologies, exercise techniques,
and nutritional strategies required to become reasonably self sufficient and to start noticing results.
Periodic sessions with your trainer later on will both help to ensure that you haven't gotten too far off track,
and can be useful for learning new techniques.
Advanced trainees: Even elite bodybuilders seek the services of personal trainers. After all, at the top,
even minute flaws can reduce a potential champion to mere contender status. The champs can't afford to
leave any stone unturned and although it's easy to assume that top athletes are also training authorities,
the reality is that when you're training several hours a day, you simply don't have the time or energy to
devote yourself to both endeavors. In the world of fitness and athletics, if you wish to be successful,
you either are a coach, or you have a coach!
Everyone from time to time: We said earlier that not everyone needs the services of a personal trainer all the time.
But the truth is, no matter whom you are, you need some expert and objective feedback from time to time!
Here are just a few examples of how to make periodic use of your personal trainer:
Training log analysis: A lot of people assume that working with a trainer always means hands on work.
This simply isn't so! A great way to make sure that your training is on track is to regularly have your trainer
to examine your training log (you DO keep one, don't you?!). Upon careful analysis, your trainer may uncover flaws
in your programming perhaps you're not varying your training program often enough or it might be that you're not resting sufficiently.
It could also be that you haven't progressed in your training pounds recently if so; your trainer can suggest strategies
for getting over the plateau. In any event, the idea is to have someone else take a look at what you're doing,
to lend objectivity to your routine. You can only benefit from doing so!
Exercise technique check up: Even if you learned the right way to do things as a beginner,
are you totally sure that you're still performing every set and rep in perfect form?
If you don't have a qualified trainer periodically check your form, it's easy to fall into bad habits.
Again, if even elite athletes need this regular supervision, you and I stand to benefit from such coaching, also.
Other periodic uses for your personal trainer: Need to lose weight for a professional photo?
Or perhaps you need expert help to rehab an injury. Or maybe you've just moved out of town and need to get
oriented to your new gym. Perhaps you need some advice on getting your kids involved in fitness.
These are just a few of the many ways that a personal trainer can get you speedy results for any number of reasons.
The bottom line? Success real success requires expert supervision, no matter what you're trying to accomplish.
None of the greats got there on their own, no matter how talented or gifted. So don't take chances with your potential!
The few dollars you'll spend on a great personal trainer will pay fantastic dividends in your health, appearance, and well being.
Who knows? You might be inspired to become a personal trainer yourself.
